2026 Membership Campaign

Why Membership Matters at Walloon Lake Association and Conservancy

By Jon Breithaupt, Executive Director

This summer, Walloon Lake Association and Conservancy (WLAC) is inviting the community to be part of something meaningful.

Our goal is to welcome 150 members by July 31st through a combination of new memberships and reacquired lapsed members as we continue protecting Walloon Lake and its watershed through land stewardship, water quality monitoring, and educational programming.

Why Membership Matters

Walloon Lake is one of Northern Michigan’s most treasured natural resources. Protecting it requires ongoing work, strong partnerships, and community investment.

Membership provides an important revenue source that directly supports our conservation efforts including:

  • Water quality monitoring and scientific research
  • Stewardship of 56 nature preserves and 20 conservation easements
  • Wildlife habitat restoration and invasive species management
  • Maintenance of 25 miles of trails
  • Educational programs and community engagement events
  • Volunteer opportunities and outdoor experiences

Every membership helps strengthen the organization’s ability to care for the lake, surrounding forests, wetlands, and streams that define the Walloon Lake watershed.

Protecting the Watershed Together

Healthy lakes begin with healthy watersheds. Through regular water quality monitoring and conservation work, the organization helps protect the ecological health of Walloon Lake while preserving the natural beauty that residents and visitors value so deeply.

Land stewardship efforts also help protect wildlife habitat, reduce erosion, maintain trails, and preserve open space throughout the region. These initiatives are only possible because of continued community support.

New Members and Returning Supporters Welcome

This summer membership campaign is focused on both welcoming new members and reconnecting with past supporters whose involvement has helped shape the organization over the years.

If you care about clean water, protected lands, outdoor recreation, and preserving the character of Walloon Lake, becoming a member is one of the most meaningful ways to get involved.

Help Us Reach 150 Members

Strong conservation efforts begin with strong community support. Reaching 150 members this summer will help expand the organization’s ability to continue science-based conservation, stewardship, and educational programming across the watershed.

We hope you will join or renew your membership today and become part of the growing community helping protect Walloon Lake for generations to come.
