Wander Walloon: Wildflower Walk with CAKE CISMA
Join us and CAKE CISMA for a peaceful hike at one of our favorite spots to look for spring wildflowers (aka spring ephemerals). Spring ephemeral flowers are short-lived, blooming after the snow melts but before trees and shrubs leaf out.
In a matter of only a few short weeks, they bloom, photosynthesize, reproduce, and enter dormancy.
Guided by CAKE CISMA Coordinator Katie Gray, we’ll unravel the life cycle of these ephemeral beauties, from their brief but spectacular bloom to their crucial role as early-season pollinators for native insects. Learn about their fascinating adaptations, ecological significance, and the role they play in the delicate balance of our natural ecosystems.
This hike is suitable for all ages but includes uneven, hilly terrain and may include muddy sections of the trail.
What should I bring?

Wander Walloon: Birding Hike with Petoskey Regional Audubon Society
Just like many Wallooners returning to the lake, migratory birds are making their way back home for the season—and we’re celebrating their arrival with a peaceful morning at Fields Preserve. Fly over for a spring birding hike led by Tracy Datlen from the Petoskey Regional Audubon Society.
Together, we’ll take a slow and peaceful walk through the preserve, listening for bird calls, and learning how to identify different species by sight and sound. Tracy will share fascinating insights about bird behavior, migration patterns, and the important role birds play in our ecosystems.
Whether you’re an experienced birder or just curious about the flurry of activity in the treetops, this is a perfect opportunity to deepen your connection with nature and enjoy the beauty of spring in full swing.
What should I bring?
Bring your binoculars and a camera, if you’d like!
Dress for the weather! We will be walking slow to observe and to not “scare” the birds away.
Sunscreen and bugspray for your comfort.

Volunteer Stream Monitoring with Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council
We’re thrilled to partner once again with the Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council for another hands-on session of Volunteer Stream Monitoring! Volunteers will step into Schoof’s Creek—suited up in waders—to collect macroinvertebrates, the aquatic insects that serve as key indicators of water quality. In addition to gathering these specimens, volunteers will help document stream conditions, contributing valuable data to support watershed conservation efforts.
All collected samples will be turned over to the expert team at Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council for further analysis, supporting their ongoing conservation work across Northern Michigan.
Please note: Participants must be comfortable wearing waders and walking in shallow streams.
